In this backstage conversation, filmed as part of her Australian tour, Jameela Jamil opens up about the lifelong scrutiny of women’s bodies and the impossible standards that shape our sense of worth.
“I think I was about 11 or 12 when I first became painfully aware of my appearance,” she begins. “I was weighed in school one day in front of everyone… the ridicule helped me understand within minutes that, oh god, this is a form of currency.”
It’s a moment that shaped how she saw herself for years to come. “I missed by twenties. I spent the whole decade wondering if I was thin enough, weighing my perceived fuckability,”, she says. A brutally honest reflection that captures the pressure many women still feel.
Fane’s footage cuts between audience reactions and Jameela’s sharp, funny commentary on body politics, as she calls out the contradictions of modern beauty standards: “We need to have a thin face, but then you’re supposed to look young. How the fuck are we supposed to achieve that? How are we supposed to have big tits but skinny arms?”
At 40, Jameela speaks with the clarity of someone who’s seen the cycle repeat too many times: “You’ll never be good enough by design, for profit.”
And yet, what makes Jameela’s voice stand out isn’t just her anger, it’s her honesty. “I’ve made so many mistakes in my life,” she admits. “One of the things that make me a rare speaker among my peers is that I’m very open to owning up to those mistakes and unpacking them with the public. I think that makes people feel safe about their own mistakes – and really, I’m just here to make sure no one else messes their life up as badly as I have.”
