We’ve all had that moment: you check your account balance and wonder, “Where did it all go?”
Chris Kohler has been asking the same question – only he’s been doing it for a living. As Finance Editor for 9News, he spends his days digging into the stories behind Australia’s money: why prices rise, how policies land, and where the everyday traps are hidden. Now, he’s bringing those insights to the stage in How They Get You – Live. Joined by satirist and broadcaster Mark Humphries for a sharp, funny and revealing conversation about the psychology of spending.
The event builds on Kohler’s new book, How They Get You: Sneaky Everyday Economics and Smart Ways to Hold on to your Money (Penguin, November 2025). In it, he unpacks the quiet systems that shape our habits: loyalty programs designed to make us spend more, supermarket shelf tactics the manipulate our perception of value, and “convenience” fees that add up far faster than we realise. It’s a book about money, yes, but also about behaviour, and how understanding the game helps you play it better.
On stage, Chris brings these stories to life, blending journalism with humour, and reminding us that while the economy might feel out of reach, the choices we make every day are really where it plays out. With Mark Humphries adding his wit and sharp observations, the conversation promises plenty of laughs and moments of real recognition – the kind where you think, “I’ve definitely fallen for that one.”
Whether you’re a careful saver or a self-confessed impulse buyer, this is a show that makes you think differently about the small print – and laugh while you’re at it.
